SPORTS: Why politicians should play chess

In a famous confrontation between Garry Kasparov and the IBM-built “Deep Blue”, the computer could examine, in the 3 minutes allocated, 20 billion moves. That means that it could evaluate each possible move and counter-move 12 stepts ahead and, on top of it, to select the lines of attack for 30 future moves. Kasparov won 2 games, brought 2 to a draw and only lost one. So that you can imagine what the human brain can do.

Orson Welles, the British author of “The Invisible Man”, wrote in 1898 in “Certain Personal Matters”, a collection of essays and stories:

“The passion for chess is one of the least explicable in the world. It slaps natural selection in the face. It is a most absorbing occupation. A least satisfying desire. A nameless protuberance upon life. It annihilates man. You take, lets say, a promising politician or a young artist that you wish to destroy.  The dagger or the bomb are archaic or unsatisfactory. Instead, teach him to play chess.”

. Pumnalul sau bomba sunt arhaice sau nesatisfacatoare – in loc de asta invata-l si inoculeaza-l cu sah.”

Imagine the possibilities of all politicians played chess!
